It feels like it’s been one hell of a wait again, but Em himself has finally confirmed that he’s ‘officially’ working on a new album. I say ‘officially’ as – Em has apparently been ‘always working’ in the studio since Recovery. But not until Em himself and / or his spokesman (this happened recently too by the way) puts a statement out regarding an issue is it usually anything more than a rumour.
When asked about his next solo record by Paul Rosenberg, Em replied that he is “starting to toy”.
It’s been nearly two years since Recovery (wow, doesn’t that time just fly by!?) and I dunno about you, but I’m thirsting for some new solo Eminem. Unlike a lot of artists, or, rappers at least – Em constantly evolves his sound and themes, he’s always going somewhere new, if only mainly stylistically.
Even though everybody says it every time, it really does feel like Em has used up the last of his ‘life fuel’ with Recovery, if he’s to continue basing his material on his life, both Relapse and Recovery have now significantly covered his time away and his addiction, so it’s time to start fresh.
A lot of fans seem to love Em’s introspective material the most, and whilst I also agree that it can sometimes feel the most meaty and perhaps in some ways, last the longest (in terms of its quality standing up years later), it’s rarely my favourite stuff from him, or why I continue to listen.
What I want from Em is originality, humour, concepts, attitude. I want to hear something new, daring and exciting. I want to be taken to a place I’ve never been taken before, both musically and conceptually. And actually, he’s managed to do that on every single album thus far for me. He always manages to introduce SOME kind of new idea or tone or style or way of doings things that just feels totally new and brilliant.
